The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved Solita’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target – a key milestone in Solita’s environmental sustainability program. Solita continues its work on emission reductions to help limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets.

Solita commits to reduce:

  • Absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2023 base year
  • Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, waste generated in operations, business travel and employee commuting 51.60% per EUR value added within the same timeframe
  • The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks

Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions are categories used to describe an organisation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on their point of origin. Scope 1 emissions refer to those created directly by the company. Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions resulting from e.g. the organisations’ purchase of electricity or heating. Scope 3 includes the indirect emissions that occur in the company’s value chain.

“This is an important milestone in our journey towards environmental sustainability and sets us clear targets. Recognising the ICT industry’s significant energy consumption and its impact on greenhouse gas emissions, we are committed to being part of the solution and are taking concrete steps to achieve our goals. With our efforts, we are also helping our customers reach their ambitious climate goals,” commented Heini Ojamäki, Chief of Staff, Solita.

Actions that matter

Solita uses renewable or carbon-free electricity in most of its offices and has limited the amount of business travel. As Solita’s biggest environmental impact comes indirectly from customer projects, the company trains its employees to design and develop digital solutions with the smallest possible environmental footprint over their lifecycle.

Solita has been a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact initiative – the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative – since 2019. Solita is committed to the initiative’s Ten Principles, which relate to human rights, labour, environment, and anticorruption goals.

Solita joined the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign in August 2021. Solita’s near-term science-based targets were approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) on 3 September 2024. Solita has calculated its greenhouse gas emissions annually since 2021 in cooperation with UseLess Company, a consultancy specialising in science-based carbon footprint calculation and life cycle assessment.

About SBTi

The Science Based Targets initiative is a corporate climate action organisation that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. We develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
