We’re thrilled to share that we took home the top prize in the first-ever Nordic Snowflake Coding Challenge, a competition that pushed the boundaries of AI and data science in collaboration with Schibsted/Aftonbladet and Snowflake.

A challenge like no other

The challenge was more than just a competition—it was a unique opportunity to dive deep into the new possibilities that Snowflake offers in AI and data science. The aim? To create innovative solutions that could optimise the performance of articles on Aftonbladet’s front page. The stakes were high, with the top five Snowflake partners in the Nordics battling it out for three weeks.

How we did it

Our winning solution was born out of the collaboration between Schibsted/Aftonbladet, who provided the real-world case study and data, and Snowflake, who equipped us with the technical resources. We built an interactive tool designed to help Aftonbladet’s writers predict how well their articles and teasers would perform before publishing.

Imagine being able to tweak your article’s content, change the teaser image, or adjust its prominence on the site, all while receiving dynamic predictions on how those changes might affect engagement. That’s what we built — a Snowflake Streamlit app that natively integrates the state-of-the-art zero-shot image classification model – CLIP deployed within the Snowflake environment, Snowflake Cortex LLM functions, and SQL/Snowpark to preprocess data and feed it into an XGBoost regression model. The model was trained in Snowpark and served alongside other models in the Snowflake Model Registry.

The dream team behind the win

Our success was a team effort. A diverse group of Data Engineers, Data Scientists, and Machine Learning Engineers came together to tackle the data and feature extraction, model training, and app building. The result was a solution that not only impressed the judges but also showcased the full potential of Snowflake’s capabilities. The judges had this to say about our work:

“Solita’s solution stood out for its comprehensive approach and excellent use of Snowflake’s full range of features.”

Looking ahead

Winning this challenge is a testament to our commitment to innovation and excellence in the field of AI and data science. It’s also a reminder of the incredible things we can achieve when we leverage cutting-edge technology to solve real-world problems.

As we continue to work with Snowflake, we’re excited about the future possibilities and what we can achieve together for our clients. This win is just the beginning!
